Monument "Angel" Memorial site
In the summer of 1944, as in the rest of Lithuania, partisan detachments were formed in Panemunis, Suvainiškis, Kvetkas and Čedasai. On December 12, 1944, partisans of the aforementioned detachments, led by Kazys Kalpokas and Kazys Krisiūnas, occupied Panemunis, shot the officers of the occupation administration and liberated the partisans, their contacts and supporters who were being held in the NKVD detention center. This was one of the most famous operations of the attack on the partisan town of Northern Lithuania, but over time, the Soviet occupation structures managed to suppress the partisan movement. The remains of the partisans of the Papiličių platoon of the Darius and Girėnas detachments and the Panemunis platoon of the Vytautas district Žaliojos detachment who died in the Panemunis area were thrown into the square of the Panemunis town, and later buried in a peat bog. In 1990, a cross was erected at this location thanks to the care of Alfons Varanauskas, and in 2000, the sculpture "Angel" by sculptor Kazimieras Kisielias was unveiled.
