Slaidēni Castle Mound Battle site
Located on the left bank of the Daugava (Ķegumas HPP) between the Pilskalni and Krasta Rožkalni houses. The easiest way to get there is by boat from the Daugava side. The hillfort is surrounded by a small stream from the north. The hillfort is very prominent, but overgrown during the growing season and difficult to recognize from the side of the HPP reservoir for the uninitiated. The photo from the 1930s found in the Latvian National Library's (LNB) "Lost Latvia" supposedly shows trenches from the First World War that surround the hillfort plateau. The following information can be found in a resource dedicated to Latvian Mounds: “… the height of the mound above the plateau is 3 m; it was damaged by trenches during the World War. The plateau and sides were also severely damaged during the war. Some of the trenches have already been leveled and covered over. Pieces of unturned pottery, coal and bones are scattered across the mixed black soil. The path that went around the mound was once paved, but some owner broke the stones and sold them.” This same source shows the mound and a photo of the Daugava with the mound before the flooding of the Ķegums HPP reservoir.
