"Sea Brother" among forest brothers - Arvid Saart
In the winter and spring of 1944, the sailing ship Alar was in winter quarters at Kõrgessaare roadstead. Arvid Saart, a man from the village of Lepiku who had run away from the German army, found refuge on the ship, thus becoming the only known “sea brother” among the Estonian forest brothers. In the late summer of 1944, the sailing ship Alar tried to escape from the port of Kõrgessaare to Sweden, but the German navy detained it. However, the second attempt from Haapsalu ended happily. In the post-war period, the Alar sailed under the flags of Panama and the USA. In 1998, the ship was towed from Denmark to Hiiumaa and is on display in the port of Sõru.
